OBJECTIVE: Clinicians understanding of sickle cell disease treatment needs and evidence based medical interventions is an important component of patient centered care amongst sickle cell patients. Observation has shown that many clinicians are not confident nor equipped with the evidence based care needed by sickle cell patients in our community. A cross sectional survey study shall be conducted to assess the knowledge and implementation of evidence based treatment amongst hospitalized sickle cell patients in 10 main clinics in Cameroon (approximately 500 clinicians and 200 final year medical students). Questionnaires shall be modified to encompass all healthcare systems within the Cameroon Health Care system.
METHODS: A total of 10 hospitals and 2 medical schools shall be included with their clinicians and medical doctors interviewed and administered a survey. Construct validity, including exploratory factor analysis and internal reliability would be assessed. Data would be analyzed using statistical methods and excel platform
EXPECTED RESULTS: The Clinician Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire evaluated by peers shall be modified for use in all 10 clinics based on history of their current sickle cell treatment plan, if any. We shall access physician knowledge and implementation of evidence based sickle cell treatment, in relation to patient rate of readmission and overall health quality (Medication adherence, current control medications and other (nutrition, exercise and understanding of disease state).
EXPECTED CONCLUSION: We hope to use results as a training guide for implementing a unified and evidence based sickle cell anemia treatment plan with the help of clinicians, especially those who completed our interview and survey
