Wanda Whitten-Shurney, MD

Pediatrician
Dr. Shurney is a pediatrician at Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Michigan where she has provided out – patient care for children who have sickle cell disease for the past 19 years.  Her interest in sickle cell disease is “genetic”.  She inherited it from her father, Dr. Charles F. Whitten who founded the clinic in 1973 and co-founded the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc.
She is a native Detroiter where she was educated in the public school system.

After graduating, with honors, from the University of Michigan in1979, she attended Medical School at Howard University graduating Alpha Omega Alpha in 1983. She did her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and spent a year in their Hematology Oncology Fellowship.
Her community involvement includes serving on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Michigan where she was a driving force in establishing there Sickle Cell Donor Program.  In 2002 she received a national award from the Red Cross for her work on the African American Leadership Conference, a committee for outreach and education of community leaders and groups about sickle cell disease and the need for blood donations.

Dr. Shurney is currently the Director of the Newborn Sickle Cell Screening Program and an Assistant Clinical Professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine.  She has a particular interest in patient education and providing coping strategies for families.
